A 2010 Bloggies Judge Shares Tips on Building a Better Blog - Page 2
Begin creating a mailing list now. Next year, send an email to everyone on your list asking them to nominate you. Include a link and the specific category you want to win. This is important, because you don’t want to spread your votes across too many categories.
Retool Your Niche or Find a New One
Chances are you’ve been blogging awhile. Are you all over the map writing about your dog, your grandpa, your job, politics, art and food? Does you blog look and sound like every other blog out there? The blogs like AfriGaget that had tight niches were the most memorable.
To help inspire you, check out Blogger’s Blog of Note each day. I have discovered some very novel blogs on this site such as b. vikki vintage and Fresh Ribbon. Both are better than many of the blogs I judged.
Work On Your Blog's “It Factor”
What is your blogs “it factor,” its indefinable quality that make it unforgettable? Does your blog have charm? Charisma? Grace? Style? Do you use a memorable color scheme? Innovative design? Interesting name? Shocking tone? Tender voice? Do you blog about something nobody else really blogs about?
I judged approximately 200 blogs form New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Africa and Europe. I judged travel blogs, tech blogs, designs blogs and political blogs, and some other categories I can’t even remember now. I visited every single blog on the ballot, and I spent time reading each one. Most of them were completely forgettable. Work on coming up with a strategy for making your blog instantly memorable. To make it to the final ballot, you need to stand out from the crowd.
Be Aware: The Bloggies Have Issues
Some of the blogs on the ballot had broken links. With so many blogs to judge, I think this may have reduced the number of judges who navigated manually to those sites. In one instance, the link was broken on one of the most memorable blogs in the competition – a blog that won last year, and this year is not even on the ballot. In addition, some of the links were not verified sites. Make sure your site is verified.
Good luck, and here’s to seeing your blog on the ballot in 2011!
