Hack a Day
http://hackaday.comhopes to make manufacturing using multiple materials accessible to home users. Multiple materials means people have constructed objects that vary from embedded circuits to hors d'oeuvres. We can't talk about edible prototyping without bringing up the CandyFab machine, which fuses sugar. The Hacktory has enjoyed their machine so far, but have found the learning curve fairly difficult. While it's great to see the cost of rapid prototyping dropping, we'll be much happier when the ease of use improves.

Topmod - open source complex surface modeler is way cool
http://www.becausewecan.org/Topmod_open_source_surface_model...While I've seen folk do similar work in Rhino, this tool seems way easier (if not as precise with it's non-NURBS basis). I see us using this in the (very near) future to make some complex light fixtures. Or at least some complex sugar structures! Check out the gallery for some very impressive models, and then fire up those 3D printers!

Is Open Source Laboratory Equipment on the Horizon?
http://www.plausibleaccuracy.com/2008/07/10/is-open-source-l...drawings of the casing for users to develop if they wish. There have been advances recently in other fields that will allow for rapid distribution and testing of open-source machines via 3d printing. If you haven’t seen it already, check out the candyfab, a low-cost 3d printer that uses sugar as the medium. These printers will only become more capable and cheaper as they are developed, which might make it possible to download the plans for a piece of equipment or labware and print it out immediately,
