Strahan: $8M or goodbye to Giants Michael Strahan hopes to get about $8 million from the Giants for what would likely be his final season with the team - and possibly in the NFL - if he decides to return to play in 2008, according to two sources familiar with his situation.

Would more money have lured Strahan back?
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2008/06/would-more-m...Would more money have lured Strahan back? Michael Strahan insists that his decision to retire wasn’t at all about the money. I’ll take him at his word on that, but I still think money would have helped. Money had been an issue on more than one occasion during his 15-year career, including last offseason before he decided to sit out of training camp and ponder retirement. He also had a bitter battle with the Giants back in 2002 over whether they could split his signing bonus over two seasons, prior to signing a seven-year, $46 million deal. And I reported earlier this offseason that Strahan was hoping for one final big payday as a condition for returning in 2008. Despite the headline, he never said that it was “$8 million or goodbye,” but I did have two sources telling me that $8 million (equivalent to what Jason Taylor will earn in Miami this season) was what Strahan was hoping to be paid if he returned. He had been talking with at least one team executive and was under the impression, according to those sources, that the Giants would go as high as $6.5 million. When asked yesterday if an $8 million offer would’ve been enough to convince him to stick around, one of those sources said, “You never know.” Which brings up a good question: Why didn’t the Giants offer him $8 million, just to see if it could’ve enticed him to return for one more season. By all accounts they wanted him to come back. John Mara had even said they were open to redoing his contract. And if it’s true that they were willing to go to $6.5 million, why not throw him another $1.5 million more? “I think it’s never a good idea to try to buy someone back,” Mara said. “Either they want to play or they don’t want to play. I think he made it pretty clear that this is not about money. He just felt it was time.” For the record, here’s what Strahan said when he was asked if any amount of money would’ve been enough to lure him back: “I sat and I read and I heard, ‘Well, if you give him $8 million …’ because that’s what another player made,” Strahan said. “One thing you guys should know about me is I never worried about what another player made. I was only trying to make what I could make. So I never would set a number because another player made it. I sat and talked with Jerry and I never brought up money. “The bottom line is I have to want to play. You could give me all the money in the world, but if I don’t want to be there, it’s not worth it. I’m only going to get hurt, because in this sport you can’t do it halfway. At least I can’t. So I never felt like money was a factor. When I read those things it didn’t upset me because I knew that’s what most people thought, but it was just like ‘Man, if people only knew I’m not even worried about the money. Money is not the issue. It’s more about wanting to do it and having the passion for it.’ And if I didn’t have the passion to feel that, then money couldn’t buy the passion, just like money couldn’t buy a Super Bowl ring.” By Ralph Vacchiano on June 10, 2008 3:21 PM |

Strahan 8 Million or Goodbye?
http://nygmennfl.blogspot.com/2008/05/strahan-8-million-or-g...New York Daily News Giants beat writer Ralph Vacchiano has a catchy title; however I think if you read this article Strahan is not giving the Giants an ultimatum. Former Giants GM George Young had a quote: "When they say it is not about the money, it is about the money". In this case, I think Strahan would like 8 million instead of 6 million. On the other hand, I think Strahan would take the 6 million for this year if the Giants make concessions. The concessions I think is: 1. Strahan would not have to attend the mini-camp in June. 2. He would report late to training camp with limited drills. I think his body has taken a beating and wants to avoid the grind of two a days. Furthermore, like Brett Favre, the longer he contemplates his decision, I think he is leaning on coming back. Remember, before retiring this year, Favre would take a long time to ponder his decision. Each time Favre took awhile to make a decision, he came back to play. Lastly, Strahan is an engaging person. As a result, he will have a career in television as an analyst. If he does retire, I am sure ESPN or another network would gobble him up and sign him to a very lucrative deal.

Michael Strahan Wants $8M to Not Retire
http://www.emqb.com/michael-strahan-wants-8m-to-not-retire/Blogcasting the National Football League, Blogcasting the NFL N.Y. Giants defensive end Michael Strahan is scheduled to receive $4 million this coming season. He wants $8 million. Otherwise, he’s probably going to call it quits. Apparently the Giants are willing to go as high as $6 million, but Michael is really pushing the envelope here. As he enters the final year of a seven-year deal, he insists money isn’t the issue. That’s very funny. Of course money is the issue. It’s the only issue. Michael has his Super Bowl ring. He hates training camp. And he would rather not wake up Monday mornings in pain. So why doesn’t he just call it quits? Because he can make more money playing than he can in retirement. And he can still play. He had 11 sacks last season. We just need to see how badly the Giants want him back. Source: NY Daily News, Photo: Newscom Tags: Michael-Strahan, N.Y. Giants Share This

Strahan Update
http://www.yournewyorksports.com/2008/05/strahan-update.htmlMichael Strahan doesn't appear to be close to announcing his future plans, but there is something the Giants could do to push things along. They could give him $8 million. That's the amount Strahan hopes to get from the Giants for what would likely be his final season with the team - and possibly in the NFL - if he decides to return to play in 2008, according to two sources familiar with his situation. ...The Giant's front office said that they would take care of Strahan financially so if money is the only issue with him coming back expect him to. The amount of money is due to Jason Taylor's contract, but Taylor is younger and more productive than Strahan, however, if you have the chance to bring Strahan back you have to do it. The article also says that the Giants are interviewing defensive end Renaldo Wynn who was drafted by Tom Coughlin back in 1997, which may tell us that they have plans to move on without Strahan and go with Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora full time.

Strahan seeks 8 million reasons to play in 2008
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2008/05/strahan-seek...How much is one more year of Michael Strahan worth to the Giants? We’ll all soon find out, but in case you didn’t see it in today’s Daily News, Strahan believes it’s worth $8 million, according to a couple of sources familiar with his situation. That would be double what he’s due in the final year of his contract. At the moment, sources said, the Giants have let him know they’re willing to increase his salary to $6 million for 2008, but obviously a little bit of a gulf remains. Strahan believes he should get as much as the Dolphins are scheduled to give Jason Taylor, a defensive end in a comparable situation - with a long resume, in his 30s, and nearing the end of his career. Now, it’s important to know one thing: Strahan hasn’t issued an ultimatum or demand about the money. He has not told the Giants to give him $8 million or he’ll retire. The $8 million figure is simply what he wants. But that may end up being just a starting point in negotiations. As the story said, “It’s not clear whether Strahan is willing to play for less.” Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t. Only Strahan knows for sure. However, both my sources were pretty sure if $8 million were offered, Strahan would be back in 2008. For the record, Strahan has continually insisted his decision is not about the money. There are other factors for him to consider, like his long-term health, lucrative broadcasting opportunities, and the admitted lure of riding off into the sunset after a championship season. That said, both sources said there’s little chance Strahan would return to the Giants if they didn’t bump his salary at least a little. The Giants’ willingness to go as high as $6 million was taken as a positive sign - a step in the right direction. There’s also the matter of whether the team will allow him to miss camp again without being fined - something he has not yet been promised. That’s another thing that could be a big factor in whether he retires or returns. Meanwhile, Strahan did say he’s “pretty much” decided whether he wants to return or retire, though he’s not 100 percent sure. He likely won’t be until everything - the money, the camp situation, etc. - is all sorted out. *** Ann Mara, wife of the late Wellington Mara, will receive an honorary doctorate from Fordham University at the school’s graduation ceremony tomorrow. The Maras have many ties to Fordham. Wellington graduated from there in 1937. John, their son, graduated from Fordham Law in 1979. And Ann’s grandson, Sean, was a freshman at Fordham this year and a member of their football team.

Banned By The Daily News
http://www.nfl-rumormill.com/2008/05/banned-by-daily-news.ht...Every once in a while, we will leave comments on newspapers websites and/or blogs, offering our wonderful, useless insight for the whole world to see. It's a way to interact and it's also a good way to spread the word about our little blog (or so we've been told.) This morning, over at the Daily News website, we posted an innocent comment on the Michael Strahan story. Believe us, when we say "innocent," we mean it: something along the lines of, "I think he'll play one more year and then head up to the announcing booth." Something like that. Then we signed it with the name of this site. We would post the exact comment if we could; unfortunately, it seems to have been deleted. Then, at 10:21 this morning we received the following email: It seems that we've been banned from posting any more comments at the Daily News website. For what, we're not exactly sure. We thought it may have been for posting our URL, so we checked their discussion guidelines: "We want to give you the chance to be heard and make your point.
