Mary Oliver's A Poetry Handbook: Imagery in Poetry
http://ritereading.blogspot.com/ 2008/ 05/ imagery-in-poetry.html
This is the fifth and last annotation of Mary Oliver's A Poetry Handbook. The fourth annotation is here, the third here and the first here. I'm not sure yet how imagery in poetry is that different from imagery in the finest prose which is often referred to as poetic because of the density of imagery, figurative specificity, compressed description, and many layers of meaning. In figurative language, a familiar thing is compared or linked to something unfamiliar. There has been much written about imagery both in the poetry and prose arenas, so this is just a brief summary.
