Red Hat Magazine has a very good summary of the OpenJDK and IceTea projects, along with how Fedora 8 & 9 have benefited from them. If you're not terribly familiar with these two projects and their differences, this is a great introduction that also mentions some of the issues that must be faced when building truly open source software, including the requirement that free software not include non-free bits. BTW, Fedora 9 was just released earlier this week.
