Open source project: OpenJDK

Contributing writer: Thomas Fitzsimmons At the 2006 JavaOne conference, Sun announced plans to open source Java. This wasn't exactly a surprise to those of us working on Java at Red Hat, given that there had been rumblings before. But this was a real announcement. We were immediately interested in learning exactly which license Sun would choose. Even if it was a legitimate open source license, it still might not allow us to combine our code with Sun's. We have been working on free Java for many yearsâmost particularly through gcj, a project started at Cygnus in 1998 by a developer named Per Bothner.

OpenJDK and Fedora
http://metypefunny.blogspot.com/2008/05/openjdk-and-fedora.h...Red Hat Magazine has a very good summary of the OpenJDK and IceTea projects, along with how Fedora 8 & 9 have benefited from them. If you're not terribly familiar with these two projects and their differences, this is a great introduction that also mentions some of the issues that must be faced when building truly open source software, including the requirement that free software not include non-free bits. BTW, Fedora 9 was just released earlier this week.
