Filed under: Misc. Gadgets Oh sure, Rock Port, Missouri managed to snag the title of being "100% wind powered," but Texas' new plan will make the Show Me state's gusty initiatives look awfully weak. Officials at the Public Utility Commission recently okayed a plan to "build billions of dollars worth of new transmission lines to bring pollution-free energy from West Texas to urban areas." The ginormous Lone Star state is already the nation's leader in wind power, but when said plan is fully implemented (pending final approval), it'll produce more wind energy than the next closest 14 states combined.

Texas Brings Wind Power to Urban Dwellers
http://green.vedvarende-energi.dk/good-clean-tech/texas-brin...Texas, which already has wind turbines in place capable of producing thousands of megawatts, now plans to bring this wind energy from where the turbines are in place to its urban dwellings. PUC Commissioner Paul Hudson claims that Texas wants to produce more wind energy than the next 14 leading wind power states (after Texas which is first, by the way) combined. To be able to accomplish this new project, Texas will be building $4.9 billion worth of transmission lines, capable of bringing 18,000 megawatts of energy to urban areas. That figure is enough to power a whopping 4 million Texan homes. Wow! Now the caveat: since the project would cost that much, citizens would have to do their part and pay an additional $4 per month for their energy bill. In the long run though, that is a small price to pay, claims Tom Smith (Texas office director of consumer advocacy group Public Citizen). It'll take about 5 years before the transmission lines go live, so Texans need not save $4 more for their energy bill for now.

Gadgets Oh sure, Rock Port, Missouri managed to snag the title of being “100% wind powered,” but Texas’ new plan will make the Show Me state’s gusty initiatives look awfully weak. Granted, customers will be paying a touch more ($4 per month is the current estimate) for all this clean energy, but pundits assert that the cost is minor when looking at just how much this will help out Mother Earth. Look for everything to go live in four to five years, barring any unforeseen setbacks. [Thanks, Adam] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
