Start-Up Entrepreneurs, Stop Sucking and Start Listening

    http://aronado.wordpress.com/2008/05/06/start-up-entrepreneu...
7 days ago in aronado · No authority yet

Fellow start-up entrepreneurs, let us shout it right now, “FU*K!” Now, a few deep breaths, a few more. OK. Nah, we’re not gonna start drinking yet, we’re gonna reflect & do some thinking. In this post, I just want to talk a little bit about being an entrepreneur, social media, a few people involved in social media and, how it can help your business begin to grow in an organic & amazingly dynamic way.     For starters, here’s the wikipedia entry for entrepreneur: “An entrepreneur is a person who has possession over a new enterprise or venture and assumes full accountability for the inherent risks and the outcome.”    The sticky message for me is “full accountability.” Basically, it is up to you and no one else to make your business successful (period) How bad do you want it?    Entrepreneurs are much like musicians, we are extremely passionate about what we do, and we want everyone to love our “music.” We have a natural tendency to create a product or service, then kinda reach out to everyone (on the freakin’ planet) and ask what they think, “will you join?”, will you try it?”. Now, I am not saying this won’t work, but it just doesn’t freakin work unless you are already known and or respected by the “right” people. So, stop right now! Quit asking people what they think about your damn web app, social networking site, widget, etc. etc. etc.    Let’s get started on your social media agenda and let’s get your BILLION dollar idea off the ground and into some kick ass blogs, and publications like Forbes, Fast Company, Inc., Wired etc.    A little housekeeping real quick: Can you explain your business in 10 words? Why did you start this business? You must be able to spit this out like a sunflower seed! What do you expect to happen with this business? Spit the seed!     Now let’s get your “SM” on!!(if you have done most of these, you NEED to at least check out he “resources!” provided. They will make all your dreams come true! 1. Don’t ask people to “help” you unless they already know, like, & trust you 2. Set up a Facebook account (resource!) http://tinyurl.com/26okdx 3. Create a wordpress.com blog (and start blogging, at least (3) times per week) 4. Get a Twitter.com account (resource!) http://www.lostartofblogging.com/twitter-guide 5. Get involved with other peoples blogs. (must be genuinely interested in their content, read their posts, think, and post comments) *don’t be full of shit! 6. Set up Google reader and read like a mofo! 7. Set up a YouTube account…have fun with it (resource!) http://tinyurl.com/yqdhtf 8. Set up a Flickr account, people want to see you…just do it! 9. Link back to your site, but do not promote yourself, just be present, be a student, and ask questions from the people you want to be like and just be yourself. 10. Drop the EGO right here, right now! Who doesn’t want to be a successful billionaire?! Don’t get all sad and down when others don’t “want to be your friend” or like your business. If your business is well thought out, unique, viable etc. people will be interested. 11. Just stay true to who you are and what you are doing. Get ready to make some changes with your biz because you will be learning from people who have made mistakes for you. Now, these people are in a position to help, and they will help you once they like, know, & trust you! It’s all good…just kick ass!       Since you are brand new let’s stop right here baby! If you start off doing these things you WILL connect with people & you WILL have people ask about your business and you WILL start to build a network of people who care about you because you CARED about them.     I highly recommend you subscribe to these ass kickin guru’s http://garyvaynerchuk.com/ www.ChrisBrogan.com www.Socialmediaexplorer.com http://www.blonde2dot0.com/blog/ http://gregverdino.typepad.com/greg_verdinos_blog/     Ps. Twitter for dummies

    http://www.tertia.org/so_close/2008/05/twitter-for-dum.html
9 days ago in So Close · Authority: 75

Twitter for dummies Let it be said I’m a bit of an Internet slut. I’ll try anything once. But most of the stuff on the Net is either too complicated, completely pointless, a waste of time or it has a small willy. And my time is too precious to waste on any of the above. There are however, some things that captivate me and keep me interested long enough to keep coming back for more. Blogging is clearly one of them. Thousands of blogs are started every day but many die out after a while. I’ve been blogging almost daily for the last four years. Clearly blogs and blogging works for me. Facebook is another thing I’ve taken a shine too. I am not as addicted as I was in the beginning, but I still love Facebook for its amazing ability to connect me to people I haven’t seen in years and years. It is social networking at its best. (PS If you want to add me as a Facebook friend, you are welcome to do so, but please let me know who you are.) I love Flickr, and I love LinkedIn. MySpace I’ve never really got but perhaps that is because I am Very Old. My latest ‘thing’ is Twitter. Twitter has been around for ages but I’ve only recently ‘got’ Twitter. What is Twitter, you ask? Twitter is micro-blogging, which is a bit like a combination between Facebook and blogging, combined into an RSS / feeder type thingy. Basically, you sign up for Twitter (VERY easy), and then you post updates (like mini blog entries) whenever the mood grabs you. People follow your Twitter stream and you can follow the Twitter stream of people you like. Or don’t like. There is apparently certain etiquette about following someone who is following you, but because people sign up with all sorts of pseudonyms, I have no idea who they are. You can set your updates to private if you are paranoid about that type of thing, but if you are, then you probably shouldn’t sign up for Twitter. So basically, Twitter allows you can keep up with the lives of all the people who interest you in one single page. Now, it sounds very boring, which is what I thought in the beginning. Why on earth would I want to follow the updates of someone’s boring life? And yes, why on earth would you, but Twitter is a lot like blogging: there are some bloody awful, boring blogs out there just as there are some pretty boring Twits / Twitters (still trying to work out the lingo) around. I’d advise against following the boring Twits. But some people are really funny in their updates and it is a great way to keep up with where people are at in a single page. The thing I love about Twitter is that it gives me a single snapshot in to this diverse world of people who interest me, fellow mommy bloggers, geeks, famous people, not so famous people, all updated in one single page. Love it. Sign up for Twitter here. You can follow my stream here. For more on info on Twitter, refer to this excellent article. Happy Twittering! Posted on 04 May 2008 in Blogging Blah Blah |

    Twitter Trends Upward

    http://www.daveserinoblogs.com/blog/2008/05/twitter-trends.h...
11 days ago in Dave Serino Blogs · No authority yet

It has been about a year or so since, Twitter - a micro-blogging platform - has been on the radar. See Wikipedia for additional details – but a quick definition is a basic, a one-sentence micro-blog entry. Now, according to some Hitwise data released earlier this week, Twitter is gaining some notable traction in the web’s 2.0 world. Year on year, Internet visits to Twitter are up eight fold. In addition, the past three months have seen site visits more than double, while traffic continues to climb - up 60% in the past month. It’s obvious people are utilizing this tool, which I’m personally still having some difficulty grasping. So let's set aside my “Twitter Block” and see what people are saying and how travel related organizations are using it. Here are a few takes from industry experts on Twitter: Steve Rubel, Edelman Digital, Micro Persuasion Blog: "It's becoming a front line for customer service. At a minimum, every consumer facing company should be monitoring the chatter. Even better, participating can cut problems off at the pass or even better foster evangelists." Todd Defren, SHIFT Communications, PR Squared Blog: "I can’t emphasize enough how valuable Twitter can be when you need a hand – an idea – or, reactions to an idea. Twitter is an instant focus group, on-call 24/7, and comprised of some of the most brilliant and thoughtful people you’d ever want to meet." Both are very insightful comments. The play I see in Twitter with the travel and tourism industry is the ability to create a buzz, along with reaching additional consumers via another social media distribution outlet. We all know that journalist’s are combing blogs and websites for new story ideas. What a great way to post some teases and see what gets picked up. In terms of reach, one current travel supplier who is currently Twittering happens to be Southwest Airlines. They had some very interesting posts, as you can see in the screen shot to the left. I captured it a few weeks ago. Click on the image to enlarge it and look at the third post. You will see it is a promo for Newport Beach. It is part of an ongoing promotion with Southwest that the CVB is a participating in. If you follow the link in the posting, you will end up on the page below. It is a landing page on the Southwest Airlines site that features flight options, hotels and things to do in Newport Beach. This is part of Southwest’s “Featured Destination” program and another opportunity for consumers to learn more about Newport Beach – this time through Twitter. Although the traffic to Twitter is increasing rapidly, it is still really a very small niche in terms of social media site traffic – it ranked #439 among social networks and forums last week. At this stage, it is worth exploring and learning more about, but I personally wouldn’t begin shuffling resources into Twitter as a marketing tool until it breaks the top 200. And finally, more than you ever to need to know - Twitter: Why It’s So Great And How To Effectively Use It, courtesy of internet entrepreneur, Tibi Puiu at the Lost Art of Blogging.

Don’t Be Fooled By April’s Links - This Month In SEO 4/08

    http://www.vanseodesign.com/blog/this-month-in-seo/tmi-seo-4...

The first This Month In SEO on the new site. Does it feel any different? The post should look familiar, but the title is new. Some constructive criticism from Lyndon Antcliff after last month’s post is responsible for the change. I guess we should dedicate this month’s links to Lyndon for his suggestions, though it was hard not to dedicate this one to myself for once as April not only is the beginning of a new site for me on a new domain, but it also marks the month of my birth. Maybe we could call it a tie and dedicate things to both Lyndon and myself. As always a number of great posts just didn’t quite fit in here. You can find some of them at my del.icio.us and StumbleUpon profiles. Now on with the show. Social Media As more people sing the praises of social media, more people are asking where the value is. How do you use social media to market yourself and your business? You’d certainly choose a different strategy than if you were marketing directly. And while it may be difficult to measure, the ROI is still there. All in all there are opportunities for small business to succeed using social media. There’s even a natural fit for artists. How could you not. So instead of links how about a quick summary. Microsoft wants to buy Yahoo so they can compete with Google. Yahoo either wants to remain independent or appear like they want to remain independent so Microsoft will raise the price of its offer. Yahoo is working on all sorts of deals with companies like Google and AOL in order to show how much more valuable they are than Steve Ballmer seems to think. Microsoft has never taken ‘no’ very well so they’ve thrown down the gauntlet and insist it’s either sale or hostile takeover. Now that the deadline has passed they seem awfully quiet. Stay tuned next month for more in the sometimes amusing, sometimes annoying search engine acquisition drama. How about quick and useful things from Google and Yahoo? Twitter, twitter?

Twitter Conversion

A few weeks ago I began conducting an experiment to convert web traffic from my most popular blog into followers on Twitter where I promote all my blogs using Twitterfeed. My design blog Goscreative.com on average draws around 200 unique visitors a day with spikes that can jump upwards to 1000 on days when the site is picked up on StumbleUpon, Digg, Good-Tutorials or any number of other sites like those. Because those are all high traffic sites, getting noticed once can turn into residual traffic for months! So my idea was to try to get people who visit my blog to follow me on Twitter where hopefully they will visit my other blogs or become repeat visitors. I started the experiment on April 7th. At that time I had 43 followers on Twitter. Today (just shy of 20 days later) I have 67 followers, a gain of 24 in only 17 days. Using tips gathered from this blog and a redesign of Goscreative.com, I was able to convert some traffic to followers. Of course, just because people are following me on Twitter doesn’t mean they are listening to what I have to say. The point is, of course, the more people who do follow you, the greater the odds that some of them might listen. Perhaps this is also why people are now paying for Twitter accounts. There’s no great secret here, I simply put a few links on my blog to my profile on Twitter. 70% of that sites traffic comes from three extremely popular posts that were written months ago. It averages about 200 uniques a day for the past year. If only 1% of that number (2 people) become Twitter followers each day, then I’ve still successfully increased the exposure of my blogs by just that much. Before I could only dream of a conversion rate like that, but I am apparently already close. A 24 person increase in 17 days isn’t half bad and if that rate remains constant or even grows, I just might reach my goal. So far it’s still too early in the experiment to tell, I’ll post a follow up in a few weeks to let you know the full results. Also, FYI, I follow 125 people on Twitter so my TPI has improved as well (67/125 = 0.53). My Twitter Profile © jon - visit the author for more great content.
