How does a man who is a fearless reporter about the invasion of illegal labor treat his own stable of undocumented workers? Isabel MacDonald, the Nation Reporter who spent a year of her life investigating the ex-CNN giant Lou Dobbs says, not very well.
If you have not heard the news, Lou Dobbs, who railed against undocumented workers for years on his nightly CNN perch, has himself been caught benefiting from undocumented labor. According to reports, Dobbs was able to knock down $6 million a year from CNN. From that small change he acquired a 300 acre ranch and started buying show jumping horses at up to a million bucks a pop. In order to care for the lifestyle of the super-rich, he hired “contractors” to take care of things. The contractors used undocumented workers to make their contracts competitive, MacDonald Alleges.
Lou Dobbs daughter, Hillary, is an accomplished show jumping rider. She is active with her father at horse shows and competitions.
Dobbs Claims he did nothing wrong. After all, it was the contractor who hired the “illegal”. How could he have known? Dobbs is almost believable in his professed innocence until you find out Dobbs’ relationships with these people. One of them was a gardener on the Dobbs estate whom Dobbs practiced speaking Spanish with. Another was hired to groom one of the million dollar babies after a good work-out. These kinds of people one gets to know, even if they are hired by a contractor.

If Dobbs didn’t know he had undocumented workers on the property he should have known. Dobbs railed about the need to use the government’s e-verify system in which companies plug into a government data-base to verify social security numbers. After telling the nation about the importance of verifying workers, and criticizing employers who don’t, Dobbs went home to his Gardener and never asked the question.Continued on the next page
