Students Call For Renewal of Dream Act, Dream Into Reality
Many people have written the Dream Act off after it failed to pass in the 2010 lame duck session. A group of dedicated activists say, ‘not so fast’. They are working to revive the law which will allow students of undocumented immigrants to go to school or serve in the military.
One of the biggest casualties of our broken immigration system are undocumented youth who were brought to the US often before they were able to form memories. Because they were so young, it is unfair to hold them guilty of crossing the border without presenting themselves to customs inspection, they say.
After growing up “American” many of these students are getting a big surprise when it is time to put in their application for college or the military. They don’t qualify to go to school because many schools won’t accept them without a social security number. They are not eligible to serve in the military. They find themselves trapped in low paying jobs and poverty with no route to self improvement. They are paying the price for their parents errors, which is unfair they say.
The Dream Act solves that problem. It allows students of undocumented immigrants to go to school or serve in the military. While prohibiting them from benefiting from health care or scholarships, the Dream Act will allow them to attend school on their own dime. If they get their degree or finish their military service, they will be eligible to apply as US permanent residents after 10 years, which puts citizenship many more years down their path. In order to quality, the students must be in the United States by age 16, not be over the age of 30, must graduate from high school or get a GED, must pass a criminal back ground check and must pay a fine which when totaled could add 2 billion dollars to the US treasury.
A new group called Dream Into Reality (DIR) is working to inform voters about the Dream Act. They say the Act failed because mainstream America was never fully informed of the plight of immigrant youth and the proposed solution. Two of the activists with Dream Into Reality will be making an appearance on 1150 am radio in Denver, CO., on Saturday, February 26th at 11:00 a.m. Mountain Standard time. Interested parties are invited to call and voice their points of view. 303.337.1150.
