Newtown: Why the 'Why' Doesn't Matter Right Now - Page 2
My thoughts on where to go from here are multi-faceted. In absence of the facts of the circumstances leading up to this tragedy, I make the assumptions that mental illness was a factor, access to a gun was was a factor, access to the school was a factor. To make my point, there are many factors involved that are not going to be immediately seen in the aftermath when emotions are at fever pitch. Please don’t misinterpret what I am saying. None of these factors are an excuse by any means. What this individual took upon himself to do was abhorrent and inexcusable no matter what factors he was influenced by. I would just like people to try and view that spectrum of causality rather than pinpoint anger and activism to one area that might be unfairly weighted, by news reports or popular opinion. I don’t believe short-sighted viewpoints that are mostly fuelled by emotion are going to be constructive in the long run.
My viewpoint might be seen as very ideological and simplistic. I say, well that’s just me. This is how I view things; I try to balance head and heart. Is there anything inherently wrong with looking at this event in that way? I honestly don’t see knee jerk reactions and hot headed emotional anger effecting change. I see change coming from passionate activism that is focused and rational that sees all sides and acknowledges all viewpoints.
I write this with open admission that I have not read all the reports and I am not ashamed to admit that I have no desire to. The facts are not going to change the outcome. I would implore the good citizens of Connecticut and the rest of America to pray for the families of the victims. Pray for them to have strength through their grief and loss. If you are a friend or neighbor of them, hold their hand and let them grieve.
Take stock of your own life. If there is someone you haven’t reached out to in a while, do it today. Put the frenzied Christmas preparations on hold and take the time to cherish what you already have. The time to effect change can wait for the moment. The people who are left behind need support.
