Water-Based Coating for Furniture Helps the Environment
Water-based coating is a finishing material or paint that uses water as a major solvent. This material has become increasingly popular in the furniture finishing industries. Compared with thinner base material, water-based coating has some advantages:
1. Water-based coating is a more environmentally friendly paint.
Spray process, which is the most popular method of application for finishing materials, always results in dust spray of finishing materials. Only about 30-50% of materials applied will coat the surface. It means that over half of the finishing materials spread and pollute the air.
Finishing processes that use solvent as thinner also result in more air pollution because of evaporation of the thinner. The use of water as a solvent is more environmentally friendly and safer for the air.
2. Water-based coating is a safer finishing material.
The finishing room has a high risk of fire; the finishing materials and solvent are highly flammable and there are lots of furniture products made from dry wood, which is highly flammable, too. The use of water as a thinner is much safer than a solvent.
3. Use of water-based coating can be used as a selling point.
With environmental and health issues being increasingly noticed, the use of materials and environmentally friendly processes interests many consumers. For this reason, some furniture businesses have switched to the system of production that is kinder to the Earth and use it as an issue to attract buyers.
