Buckle Up: It Should Be the Law
Would you ever put your child in the car without making them buckle up? Hopefully, your answer is an obvious “no way!” That being said, our beloved pets should be provided with the same safety precautions as well. Animals and people face the same threat of injury while traveling in vehicles.
Seeing as I am overly maternal with Mr. Tobie, my Eskimo Spitz, I purchased a car harness for him from day one. There have been times where I felt like I was depriving Mr. Tobie from the usual doggy car experience of hanging his head out the window.
My thoughts of depriving Mr. Tobie quickly changed several summers ago. I was fortunate enough to have a summer job at a snazzy and overpriced doggy resort, where I could tote Mr. Tobie along with me.
One afternoon while cruising home from work with Mr. Tobie in toe, someone decided red meant go instead of stop. Instinctually, I slammed on my breaks causing my car to come to a screeching halt. A collision was avoided, but the intensity of the stop surely would have caused Mr. Tobie an injury of sorts had he not been strapped in. Although nothing happened, the thought of what could have happened terrified me.
The issue of pet safety in the car has become a nationwide campaign with programs such as the Bark Buckle UP pet safety program. This program travels around the country, discussing the importance of keeping your pet safe in the car. Big names such as Cesar Millan are teaming up with this pet safety project.
According to barkbuckleup.com, the official site for the Bark Buckle UP pet safety program, “when driving 35 mph, a 60-pound unrestrained dog can cause an impact of 2,700 pounds, slamming into a car seat, windshield, or passenger.”
The tools are out there for us to protect our pets; we just have to use them. Christian Selter, the founder of Bark Buckle UP, said, “safety belts can only work if you use them– that costs nothing – but not using them can cost lives – pets included.”

We each owe it to our pets to be the most responsible owners we can be. Are you up for the challenge?
