Was Joe Paterno Wronged When He Was Fired?
Joe Paterno was supposedly stunned last night that the Pennsylvania State University's Board of Trustees would fire him after all that Joe Paterno had done for the school. Admittedly, Joe Paterno did win 409 games for the Nittany Lions, and that is all he will ever likely win as he is 81 years old. That's the most ever for a Division I football coach. Joe Paterno did have an 8-1 record this season. Yet Joe Paterno is “not the football coach” in his own words speaking outside his house last night. Moreover, he's “got to get use to that.”
As one can plainly see from his self-inflicted pity-party last night, the likely reason that Joe Paterno would be stunned over his firing would be the same reason that Joe Paterno allegedly didn't call police when he was allegedly told about shower scenes between one of his defensive assistant coaches and a little boy. And that reason is because Joe Paterno does not love anyone but Joe Paterno.
Love your neighbor as yourself. That is what Jesus said in the Book of Matthew in the Bible. Whether you are a Christian or an admitted Atheist like Penn Jillette, you have to at least respect and agree with the sentiment of the passage. Even in Penn Jillette's new book, “God, No!” he writes that the Atheist ten commandments would include “Love” and “Do not put things or even ideas above other human beings.” Moreover Mr Jillette stated, “when your house is on fire, I'll be there to help.”
Well, Mr. Paterno, allegedly you were not there when those 8 boys houses were on fire. Allegedly, you weren't there to stop the additional anal rape of pre-teens by your supposed heir-apparent. Mr. Paterno, you allegedly failed as a human being to love your neighbor. You allegedly put things - like your job and your reputation and your wins – ahead of loving your neighbor, loving those little boys enough to stand up and speak up on their behalf.
Perhaps as Mr. Paterno thinks “it through,” he could dedicate what remains in his life to protecting little boys (and let's not forget little girls too) from alleged monsters like Jerry Sandusky. That would be a major act of repentance that Mr. Paterno could do to mend his alleged reputation.
