Troublesome Sticker Surfaces In Casey Anthony Trial
Part of Technorati's ongoing special coverage of the Casey Anthony murder trial.
Yesterday, testimony continued for a third Saturday in a row, as jurors, prosecution and defense teams focused themselves on evidence analyzed for the Casey Anthony murder trial.
Casey Anthony has been charged with the first-degree murder of her daughter, Caylee Anthony, around June of 2008. Anthony has pled not guilty. If found guilty of the crime, she may face the death penalty.
“Coffin fly” evidence brought to bear
Forensic etymologist Neal Haskell of St. Joseph’s College discussed photos of “coffin fly” egg casings found in the trunk of Anthony’s white Pontiac Sunfire. Coffin flies are flying insects typically found in the presence of decaying bodies, and according to Haskell were evidence that a corpse had been stored in the Sunfire for between 3-5 days. Time estimates were based on samples of the egg casings taken on the napkins in the car, coupled with known reproductive rates of the unique insect.
In defense cross-examination by attorney Jose Baez, it was established that the flies could possibly have been attracted by a number of things, including the trash in the trunk.
The mysterious duct tape re-emerges
Duct tape found on Caylee Anthony’s decomposed skull was then discussed, as Orange County Sheriff’s Office Forensics Supervisor Ronald Murdock was called to the stand.
State prosecutors have alleged that Casey Anthony used chloroform and duct tape to smother and suffocate her 2-year-old daughter Caylee, while the defense has hinted at Caylee having died due to drowning in the family pool, with a subsequent alleged cover-up by both Casey and her father, George Anthony.
Murdock stated he had searched the Anthony home, finding only a single piece of the Henkel brand duct tape, the same brand tape used to bind the body in a garbage bag and allegedly to cover Caylee’s mouth and nose. This single piece was found on a gas can owned by Casey’s father, George Anthony.
George Anthony stated in testimony on the 3rd day of this trial that he had placed that particular piece of duct tape on the gas can top fix a broken spout, after confronting daughter Casey for taking them without notifying him. This episode was during the time period that Caylee Anthony was missing.Continued on the next page
