Pass a Cold One, Siri! BrewBot Lets You Make Beer With Your iPhone
This is a machine overlord that I could greet with open, greedy, thirsty arms...
According to Technorati listed tech blog Gadget Review, there's a KickStarter out there that wants your funding to help them mass produce an automatic beer maker that you can control using your favorite mobile device.
The machine is called BrewBot, of course, and according to its KickStarter page, the device's inventors, Belfast-based Cargo, want to create "an easy-to-use, controlled environment that is aesthetically pleasing, and frees up brewers to focus on the recipes." Never made beer before in your life? No problem. "You don't need to know anything about brewing," say Brewbot's makers. "You are guided through the process from beginning to end."
I can take instruction, especially if a custom brew is at the end of the process.
BrewBot is designed with as many off-the-shelf food industry parts as possible, and is controlled by an inexpensive, open-source programmed Arduino system. BrewBot's home-spun iOS app provides all of the beer-making instructions you'll ever need, taking temperature and pH signals from the system's sensors and letting you know when to turn what valve, or to add what ingredients.
Fresh hops, barley, and other ingredients needed to make your brews can be purchased from the BrewBot store, or from your local provider. You figure out how to tweak your recipes, and let the app take it from there. When the process is done, you'll have roughly 5 gallons of fresh beer to bottle and show off at your next SuperBowl party.
No guarantees your recipes will give Samuel Adams a run for their money, but you can always try and try again...
How much will the machine set you back? Early prototypes of BrewBot run about $2,400 (about .42 cents a beer over the life of the machine, according to Gadget Review). Of course, if the company gets off the ground and receives its crowd-funded opportunity to harden the works for a longer life, the price of BrewBot may come down, as well as the price per cold one.
If the BrewBot folks need anyone to review the product, I'm your man. Hint. Hint.
