No Cell Phones for Unwed Women in Indian Village
An Indian village has recently issued a decree forbidding unwed women of their village to use mobile phones. Why unwed women? Since they have more probability of using these devices to talk with men they fall in love with. If these men belong to the same clan, or ‘Gotra’ as it is called in India, then their parents and other elders of the clan will be left with no other option but to kill them.
That is honor killing, the new nuisance that has emerged recently to disrupt the modern Indian society and drag it backwards in the darkness of the medieval times.
Does Indian constitution give village councils such authority that they can pass a rule or decree that everyone in the village is legally bound to follow? No. But what can a young girl do if all of her family, her community goes against her and even the police, the local governing bodies and politicians refuse to go against these self-proclaimed governments, the Khap Panchayats.
These Khap Panchayats are trying to establish that people of the same Gotra are siblings. Now what is a Gotra? It is a group to which you and your family belong and its root goes back to ages. That means you and all families with the same Gotra somehow are descendents of one Male from ancient times. Thus, you become related to such a degree that same Gotra marriage can lead to genetic problems!! Remember this lineage is considering only through the male line.
These people are so much concerned that they can kill for that. honor killings can come about because a woman married a man of different religion, Caste or just against their parent’s wishes, thereby ruining their family’s Honor.
The Khap Panchayats are now even claiming that the Indian government should make a change in the Hindu Marriage Act forbidding same Gotra marriages. They claim that they have nothing to do with the recent surge of Honor Killings, yet they arrange protests at New Delhi while the government declares that it is going to make laws to prevent the honor killings.
The Lank village council that has issued this decree is in the Mujaffarnagar district of the state of Uttar Pradesh. From that district the police reports 34 cases of elopement. Already eight among them have been subjected to honor killing, according to the police.
