All of which leads us to the fact that while morally we know this to be wrong, we are, as individuals, also at a loss as to what we should do about it. I am a firm believer in personal responsibility. If we are willing to accept that we can become masters of our own fate in business, using our ingenuity, discipline and capacity for hard work to make money in a tough, competitive world, then we should also be capable to change that world for the better.
We should be able to help it progress a little so that ‘losers’ in the historical sense of the word are not left destitute or without hope, feeling that they have little to lose. We should be able to help it progress a little so that age-old stereotypical abuses perpetrated by the stronger against the weaker, no longer happen. And we should be able to help it progress a little so that as cultural barriers fall and national boundaries become eroded we manage to enrich ourselves culturally and spiritually through an intermingling with others, without that interaction devolving into acts and actions which abuse their lack of sophistication, or naivety or innocence.
That is a lot to ask. Because there is no prescriptive pattern here, no ticket to buy, no charity ball to go to, it is difficult to find the time, energy and will to act. Essentially I am calling for a better world created by us. The ‘why’ is easy enough to explain. We live on a planet and a period in history when the challenges facing us from nature and history are enormous enough for us to not really want to go off looking for more. Yet, this is exactly what we need to learn to do.
Irrespective of how tough a day in the office or online or on the road has been, we still need to have the willingness and discipline to stop and ask ourselves ‘Have I done enough to make the world a better place today?’. If we can answer that, with clarity, each day, we then set ourselves upon a path where our success in business is mirrored by our success in creating the kind of world we all want to live in.Continued on the next page
