Honor Killings: Are they Really Honorable?
First of all, before speaking my mind, I would like to give you a brief meaning of what an "honor killing" is. An honor killing is the killing of a member of a family or social group by other members, in the belief of the perpetrators that the victim has brought dishonor and shame to the family or community and are mostly directed against women and girls.
There are four behaviors or actions that are considered reasons for a person to get killed and which brings shame to the family:
1. Dressing in a manner unacceptable to the family or community.
2. Wanting to stop or prevent an arranged marriage or having a desire to marry a preference.
3. Engaging in heterosexual acts outside of marriage like premarital sex and dating.
4. Engaging in homosexual acts.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) estimates that the number of honor killings per year is around 5,000, but it expected to be much more, probably 4 times more.
Now why on earth do people kill their own family members?! Am I the only the one that thinks this is insane and absolutely shocking?! We're in the 21st Century for God's sake and people are still doing this?! People should realize that killing won't solve anything, especially your own flesh and blood.
I just heard about the recent honor killing in Jordan, and being my country of origin, this puts me to shame. Seeing my own people killing their own family members to defend their "honor". I'm sorry, but what?! I would be a bit pissed off if one of my family members goes against the values, but that's about.... I wouldn't kill them!
I just heard that someone killed his sister by stabbing her mercilessly 17 times.... absolutely shocking. How do people have the audacity to kill someone, not only someone, but their own flesh and blood, and the decency to say it was out of "honor".
This is absolutely disgraceful and insane, religious and honorable reasons shouldn't be a reason to kill anyone, especially a family member. There should be laws and punishment forbidding and punishing this act, but sadly that is not case in many countries, we must fight now to stop this.
So is it really "honorable" to kill a family member? What do you think? Should this type of act be forbidden? What is your opinion about it? Please share your thoughts.
