74-Year-Old Man Killed in Lakewood, California Wal-Mart
A 74 year-old man was killed in the middle of the day in a Wal-Mart in Lakewood, CA on November 1st by homeless man.
The homeless man, 46 year-old Richard Lawrence Kalfin used a baseball bat to bludgeon the helpless, unsuspecting elderly man to death.
It began when Kalfin grabbed a baseball bat from a sporting good aisle of the massive department store and began pacing the aisles alone. The victim entered an aisle of the sporting goods section a few minutes later and Kalfin soon approached him.
Kalfin then asked the elderly man for spare change. Apparently not happy with his answer, the homeless man swiftly smashed the bat against the victim's head and continued to do so until he was dead. The entire encounter was caught on surveillance cameras, telling police exactly what happened. Police report that the old man received no warning that the attack was methodical and cruel.
They also said that the attacker and the victim did not know each other, but rather, it was act of random violence and the elderly man was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Kalfin was arrested at Wal-Mart for the murder of his victim and now has bail set at $1 million. The Los Angeles Wal-Mart was shut down after the murder and opened the next day at 10:30 AM. The corporation of Wal-Mart made an announcement on November 2nd, "We express our deepest condolences to the family of this man as they grieve the loss of their loved one. We are working closely with law enforcement to offer what information we have such as surveillance video that might help with the investigation."
Whether the corporation will help the family of the victim or not remains to be seen.
