The Top 12 Ladies of American Idol Perform
The top 12 ladies took the stage last night on American Idol. It was a rough go for some. Expectations were high and they fell fast. The first night out is always the hardest and inexperience mixed with nerves can make for a bit of a mess. There were some standouts, and some that clearly have talent but need to work a bit at getting it out there.
My 3 favorites of the night:
Crystal Bowersox: She covered Alanis Morisette's, One Hand in My Pocket. While her version closely mirrored the original, she is such an original that it didn't take anything away from her performance. She sings with a purity that truly resonates, while playing the harmonica and guitar. Idol or no Idol, we will be hearing from her for a long time to come.
Lilly Scott: Covered the Beatles, Fixing a Hole. It was said last night and it bears repeating, she has a true 'indie artist' style. She sings with soul, and a little bit of folk and keeps true to her own style. I love her unusual vocal quality and like Bowersox, you just want to keep listening to her sing.
Siobhan Magnus: Did Chris Isaak's Wicked Game and continues to be the dark horse. She is true to her own style, has amazing vocal control and I think she is going to keep pleasantly surprising.
Three honorary mentions:
Didi Benami: Covered Ingrid MIchaelson's The way I Am, and honestly, it could have been Adele up there singing. While she showed she had some really good vocal chops which we knew, she needs to find her own style.
Michelle Delamor: Did Alicia Keys, Fallin, and it goes without saying that this is one incredibly hard song to sing. She sang it well, surprisingly so, but nothing original or notable in the performance. With time, hopefully she will find her own and really shine.
Katelyn Epperly: Sang the Beatles song, Oh, Darling and showed great vocal control and a beautiful, husky, very unique tone to her voice.
As for the rest, they didn't have that great of a night. I know Janell Wheeler can do better and Paige Miles as well. I am hoping they get to stick around and show the world what they can do. The 2-hour show flew by, and I enjoyed every moment, from the highs to the lows. The results show should be a hum dinger for this one. I hope that people really vote on talent and keep the ladies that brought it with their votes.
On to the Men tonight!
