SoundCloud: The You Tube for Sound - Page 2

2) When you distinguish between music and audio, what do you mean by audio? In other words, SoundCloud is more about "sound" than music?
Yes, SoundCloud is the world’s leading social sound platform — it’s not just about music, but any kind of sound — from audio books such as Penguin to recordings of earnings calls (like Facebook’s), to The Guardian Audio Edition, a weekly selection of longer articles in audio form to Big Boi using SoundCloud to grow his audience. Sound is an integral part of our lives and SoundCloud helps anyone to connect and share sounds on the web.
By “audio” we mean everything that is not music-focused (e.g. podcasts, audiobooks, radio stations, radio programs, etc.). For example, radio stations use SoundCloud to help them reach an audience far beyond the airwaves. WBEZ in Chicago uploads its daily and weekly programs to SoundCloud, embeds the tracks on its website and posts to the station’s other social media streams. This way they reach the community on SoundCloud, the station’s own website visitors and the following they already have on Facebook and Twitter.
3) It appears that SoundCloud is an open community, but where does this leave professional music and audio creators? Or, perhaps SoundCloud serves to distort the lines between amateur and professional?
SoundCloud is now focused on enabling everyone to connect with largest community of music & audio creators. SoundCloud’s community of sound creators spans a huge range of artists, producers and organizations. From independent artists like Cyra Morgan to Grammy-winning bands like Deftones. From news outlets like The Economist to rapper/producers like Snoop Dogg. From comedians like John Oliver and Andy Zaltzman of The Bugle to The White House to politicians like Mayor Michael Bloomberg. And from storytellers such as 99% Invisible to R&B artists like John Legend. Plus everyday creators of music and audio, sharing everything from passing thoughts to life-changing moments.
4) Related to the previous question, how is SoundCloud used for professional use? Are music supervisors, A&R, producers, advertisers, etc. turning to SoundCloud to find music to license for TV, film, commercials, games?
SoundCloud is now one of the default platforms for artists, bands and many other types of sound creators. If you simply post sounds to our platform then it’s just about driving your audience to your SoundCloud profile, but you can also share those sounds to social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Flipboard and Pinterest and you can encourage fans and bloggers to share your sounds to their audiences. For entertainment, we’ve organically seen the hit sci-fi movie Looper, using SoundCloud for theatrical commentary (e.g. you listen to the recording in the movie theater upon a second viewing to find out more information from the director). We’ve also seen composer Hans Zimmer actively scoring The Dark Knight Rises and posting those sounds to SoundCloud.Continued on the next page
