KidTunes: Mind of My Own - Frances England
Kids need tunes with attitude. They need to know that others feel the way they do, even when they know they are wrong. “Mind of My Own,” the title track on Frances England’s new album (release date: November 9, 2010) reveals the wild thing in every child--the little being who pretends to misunderstand or accidentally-on-purpose forgets the rules. And, really, who hasn’t rebelled against being told what to do because she has a mind of her own? Or looked forward to being the one that makes the decisions that govern his life (important ones like bedtime)?
Mind of My Own is an easy mix of songs that express a child’s viewpoint, songs about children, and songs that address children. England sings reassuring songs about love (“Come Back Home,” “All the Ways”), songs about the things that kids find important (“Bicycle,” “Pieces of Me”), and how they feel about themselves (“Red Balloon,” “Mind of My Own”). Her first two albums (Fascinating Creatures and Family Tree) are both award winners, and if there is any logic in the universe Mind of My Own will join their ranks.
Based in San Francisco, England charms with an indie/folk sound and songs that all parents know were meant to be shared by them and their children. In celebration of the release of her new CD, Kids Place Live (Sirius XM Radio) invited England to do a one-hour show this weekend. Those who tune in will hear the entire CD as well as background info on some of the songs. England will also take listeners on a tour of Haight Ashbury (San Francisco). Tune in and discover just how special Mind of My Own is. The program will be broadcast nationally at the following times: Friday, November 5, 9 pm ET/6 pm PT; Saturday, November 6, 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. (eastern); and Sunday, November 7, 12 noon ET/9 a.m. PT. Now you have two important things to do this weekend: listen to Frances England’s new CD, and set your clocks back.
Bottom Line: Would I buy Mind of My Own? Yes, and I would listen to it over and over and over and over and...
