Video: Original Alice In Wonderland Film Restored, Over 100 Years Later
The BFI National Archive has restored the first film adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic, Alice In Wonderland.
The film, made in 1903, a mere 37 years after the novel was first published, was badly damaged. The BFI painstakingly restored what was left of the film, with only 8 of the original 12 minutes remaining. Directed by Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow, the first Alice In Wonderland was artistically based on the original illustrations of Sir John Tenniel. Considering this film was made only 8 years after the dawning of modern film, this is a major achievement.
The much anticipated Tim Burton film version of Alice In Wonderland, featuring Johnny Depp, opens today in theaters around the country.
