Image Comics - New Release Reviews For August 8, 2012
This past may comic stores across the nation participated in the most successful Free Comic Day, yet. Retailers have a new promotion that will run through October called Hallowe'en Comic Fest. Unlike FCD, there will be special comics being offered which might be sold or given away.
Not participating, yet, is Image Comics. Though, there is still time for that to change. In the interim, they're offering five new comics, this week, that should give you a Halloween scare! Titles are scored on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the very best possible. We take the time to read these books so your time isn't wasted.
It Girl! And The Atomics - Issue 1
This issue starts with a lovely cover by creator Mike Allred. It has the look of a glamor magazine and it's down-right sexy. The interior artwork is very adequate and feels like traditional Image artwork. The story is quirky, much like the Madman universe.
It's funny, even though it's not very compelling. Particularly amusing is how the story is advanced because the lead character is bored. Normally, that would be considered lazy writing but here it makes sense.
Score: 8 out of 10
Hoax Hunters - Issue 2
The issue begins with a groovy Weekly World News style cover. Inside the look is less polished but it's still serviceable. The tale is interesting, weird, an horrific though it does have brief moments of humor peppered in. However, there is enormous amounts of back story between the characters and the casual way it's discussed is annoying as the reader knows none of it. The unfamiliarity decreases the tension as the stakes drop because of the unknown.
