Digital Audio Workstation (DAW): Foundation for a Home Recording Studio - Page 8
When music is created, recorded, edited and produced entirely in the digital realm, external hardware is not necessarily needed, but the digital equivalents are. If multiple instruments and/or singers are being recorded at the same time, how well a program can handle multiple I/O's is crucial and hardware is necessary. No one wants to have a great vocal or instrumental performance interrupted because of technical issues.
Tech support, from actual personnel to online documentation, forums, etc. will make the difference when it comes to trouble shooting, and it's a guarantee at some point something will go wrong. The faster you can solve a problem the faster you can get back to making music. Make no mistake, the constant complaints of spending too much time fussing over technology preventing creatives from getting down to the business of creating are warranted.
