Small Biz Spotlight: Slide to Play (Pt. 2)
This is the second part of a three part interview series about the mobile market, particularly gaming, with the editors of Slide to Play, Tim Rattray, Assistant Editor and Andrew Podolsky, Editor-in-Chief.
In this post, we discuss the rules of the road for consumers when it comes to deciding which mobile apps to embrace.
TR: Considering the volume of mobile apps out there, what are some basic rules of the road consumers should adhere to when thinking about downloading a mobile app?
Tim Rattray: With the wide variety of choices available on the App Store, consumers should always make sure to check out multiple options and get the opinions of both the press and other consumers before making a purchase. This applies to $0.99 games as well, since making a wrong decision based on price leads to needing to buy another app better suited for you. The cost adds up over time.
With games the process is a little different. Especially with major franchises brought to the iPhone in some form, there are a lot of factors to think about: does the gameplay suit your style, are there any pressing issues, etc. That’s where a site like Slide To Play comes in. We can help casual and hardcore gamers find a game best suited for them.
AP: We've also found that just because a game is one of the top-selling in the App Store doesn't mean it's the best, even though it has that "thousands of people can't be wrong" feeling. Also, we don't have a high opinion of iTunes reviews. They're often written without any serious thought, or sometimes they are shill reviews planted by disingenuous promoters.
We try to call attention to the very best on the App Store with our regular reviews and features. Our Game of the Month and Runner-Up are the unequivocal best games on the App Store, but anything that gets a 4/4 is considered a "Must Have", or at least one worth investigating to see if you're interested in the genre or style. Our Ten to Watch is also a great feature to look at if you want to know about the very latest interesting iPhone games.
In the final post with the Slide to Play crew, the team will touch upon the iPad and the next generation iPhone and how both devices might revolutionize mobile gaming.
