Apple Loses Patent Case Against Kodak
Apple, the leader in smartphone and smartbook category lost patent case against Kodak. Apple filed a case against Kodak in April 2010 just months after Kodak blamed RIM and Apple of patent infringement. The case was for a technology of Kodak related with a patented way of allowing people to preview images in Camera.
The International Trade Commission gave the verdict in favor of Kodak. This assures that Kodak's digital camera technology is exclusive and not uses Apple's patented technology.
Apple filed a case against the technology used by Kodak in its C, Z and M series products. Also Playsport and Slice video cameras by Kodak were under scanner in the filed case.
In the verdict International Trade Commission said that the none of the two patents in the case were infringed and Kodak was cleared of the Allegations. This patent triumph will generate licensing royalties of atleast US$1bn for Kodak
The calculated amount of US$1bn consists of 964 million received from agreements done with both Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics over the same patent.
With this Eastman Kodak’s share jumped by 6%. On the other hand Apple's and RIM shares were down..This is really a very big win for Kodak. Even the companies and Brands who don't take care of patent laws should take a strict lesson from this incident. Before filing a patent case proper patent search should be done to avoid such humiliation.
