Groupon Launches in Australia as Stardeals
Groupon Inc., is now Down Under.
Today, it began serving the Australian marketplace under the name Stardeals.This is a major step for the fast-growing e-coupon company only weeks after it rejected a rumored buyout by Google.
“We’re thrilled to introduce our network of 60 million subscribers to the world-class merchants of Australia,” said Rob Solomon, president and chief operating officer of Groupon Inc., which translates to ‘Stardeals’ in Australian. “Stardeals will change the face of local collective buying, leveraging the best practices Groupon has pioneered in more than 40 countries around the globe.”
Since its launch in November 2008 Groupon Inc. has led a worldwide movement in e-commerce, using the principles of collective buying to bring millions of dollars in new revenue to local businesses while saving more than $1.6 billion for subscribers. Stardeals joins the Groupon network which serves nearly 60,000 merchants in more than 500 markets and 42 countries.
In its first week, Stardeals’ inaugural features include surfing lessons, dance classes and upscale spa treatments. The site currently serves Melbourne and Sydney with plans to expand to eight more territories in coming months.
