If you have a few minutes to spare this weekend, and haven’t done this yet, contribute just a few minutes to the open source census. What’s the aim of the Census? Pretty ambitious: The Open Source Census is the first collaborative, global project to count the number of installations for each open source software package. …

There’s more to Linux than support
http://zonker.opensuse.org/2008/05/09/theres-more-to-linux-than-support/If Oracle had its way, there’d be one Linux distro — but who would do the development? According to this post by Paula Rooney, Oracle’s Edward Screven says that Linux distro vendors should compete “purely on the support side of the business.” That, of course, is complete nonsense. …

Demise of the press release… Rise of the Lizards
http://zonker.opensuse.org/2008/05/08/demise-of-the-press-release-rise-of-the-lizards/This post by Melissa Shapiro of Mozilla illustrates (one of the reasons) why Firefox and the Mozilla Foundation is doing so well at getting the word out about Firefox and other news from the foundation — because they’re not relying on the press release as a sole means of getting the word out. …

I can't speak for the entire industry, but I'd rather see an open source project create jobs for hundreds of people rather than making one billionaire. Joe 'Zonker' Brockmeier works for Novell as the openSUSE Community Manager.

Quick Mention: Novell Potty Calls the Kettle Black
http://boycottnovell.com/2008/05/07/quick-mention-novell-pot...sales executives have started calling the Suse Linux Enterprise Server coupons “royalty payments”" –Matt Asay, April 21st, 2008 The headline is just a game of words and nothing personal, but mind the following take on OpenSolaris, courtesy of OpenSUSE’s community manager: Ultimately, I can’t help but think that the problem that Sun is trying to solve with OpenSolaris is not a technical one, but one of control. Specifically, the company is not ready to cede control over its operating system to the community at

Specifically Quest, Novell and Xandros are all on board with functionality to enable System Center users to manage third party applications on top of Windows, Linux and Unix. In fact, if you read Joe Brockmeier, Microsoft’s new Linux management capabilities are all “thanks to Novell”. One question that remains is whether users will trust the management of their Linux an Unix servers to Microsoft. My guess is that the new cross-platform

A plea for community
http://www.cnet.com/8301-13505_1-9937920-16.html?part=rss&ta...Sifting through the news from JavaOne this week, I can't help but wonder when we'll stop developing our personal silos and truly get into community. Sun is a wonderful company, but I'm with Zonker on this one: Do we really need another operating system, application server, RIA platform, etc. This isn't just a Sun platform. IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, etc. are all guilty of the same eighth deadly sin of overdevelopment and reinvention of the wheel.

OpenSolaris and Linux
http://www.novell.com/prblogs/?p=466You may have seen that Sun announced the availability of OpenSolaris yesterday. For some informed perspective on how OpenSolaris and Sun relate to the Linux community, check out openSUSE community manager Joe Brockmeier’s take on the issue. Zonker was speaking at Sun’s CommunityOne conference yesterday and offers a thoughtful view.
