Things I Never Learned
Things I Never Learned: Most of us, as we meander through our twenties and beyond, must have moments where we realize that we don't know things that we feel like we should know by default--things that Real Grown-ups seem to know. Some of these are things that are explicitly taught, but others are just supposed to come in through osmosis. For me, the list includes items such as how to walk in high heels, what a 401k is, and David Bowie's music (excluding the soundtrack of Labyrinth, about which I can boast above-average familiarity). Then there are items that aren't such a given; things that many of us are forced to learn, but that can't be explicitly taught. Like how to let go of control; how to hold onto yourself in a relationship; how to escape from a bear. In my quest to become a Real Grown-up, I'm setting out to reflect on those list items I've bumped into along the path through my first decade of so-called adulthood--and to tackle, one by one, those I haven't figured out yet.
