I got off a good line in an interview for richmond.com’s A Hotbed of Citizen Journalism: “It comes down, I think, to the fact that Richmond has these great, old neighborhoods,” said John Murden, creator of one of Richmond’s first community sites, the Church Hill People’s News. …

The804.com–Richmond VA Real Estate Blog
http://the804.com/blogSo the Times Dispatch writes a self serving bullshit story about how they won 7 VPA award for ADVERTISING, and they still won’t cover a national Pew study about Richmond? Kudos to Richmond.com, for immediately fixing a fatal flaw in the article, not linking to the blogs mentioned in the story. What does all this improvement get you? Traffic from here, here, here, here, here, but most importantly here (all those other links bring your stories to the top). Traffic = Advertising $.

If I could bottle up my favorite memories of Friday Cheers and send them around the world, I would. Here are a few:

River City Rapids
http://www.rivercityrapids.comCapulets and the Montague's. Why this outlet goes elsewhere to cover other bloggers in other cities and how they are doing amazing things befuddles me, especially because we have so much local talent here. In this story's example, it's food blogs. Check out Brandon Eats, River City Food and Wine, Veronica's Kitchen, among many worthy others. Maybe it is easier to pull a story off the AP wire and pay for it than have a reporter go out and ask a few questions of the locals.

Finally -- Richmond Gets First Place (for Weblogging)
http://floricane.typepad.com/buttermilk/2008/04/finally----r...Still, I've always felt that community-focused sites like the 270+ serving Richmond (see RVABlogs and RVANews for a complete rundown on them all) provide unique and important voices, and add something significant to Richmond's culture. Je ne sais pas recently pointed readers to a report on citizen journalism sites recently issued by the Project for Excellence in Journalism because Richmond ranks at the top of the 15 large, medium and small cities for the number of and quality of news and community focused weblogs.

Super-hyper local community blog to launch Thursday
http://tobaccoave.wordpress.com/2008/03/31/super-hyper-local...As we watch more traditional media taper off - this being the big community blogs - it is important that we focus on the extremely-hyper local news,” said GTHBBAMAH.net editor Tony Eaves. “This is stuff that is important to these residents - things that are taking place, literally, just around the corner.” Articles, he said, could include updates on whoever owns that blue Volkswagen Jetta whose alarm keeps going off; the folks in that apartment complex on the corner
