    http://gonintendo.com/?p=43162

The NY Times did something really interesting with Wii Fit. They pulled together 5 different types of people to see how they liked Wii Fit. Some of these people were average joes, others were exercise gurus. NY Times has labeled their guinea pigs as,

Wii Fit is hard on the knees

    http://lilifx.blogspot.com/2008/06/wii-fit-is-hard-on-knees....
33 days ago in The Lili Effect · Authority: 2

As part of the New York Times review of the Wii Fit, Yoga instructor and author Cyndi Lee is quoted as being concerned that some of the yoga poses are being presented incorrectly. “Like with the warrior pose they show the knee going past the foot, which is a big no-no,” she said. She failed to notice another detail about the presentation of Warrior - the instructor's front heel is raised up off the balance board. Yikes! Both of these factors - if imitated by a Wii gamer - would put a lot of undue stress on that front knee. Keep the front heel firmly planted, and keep the knee directly above the ankle. If you're not stretching the hip, then widen your stance. Not only will this alignment keep you from hurting your knees, it will really improve your score! Also, in another one of the very beginning poses on Wii Fit - the "Tree" pose, there is a missing modification. A lot of people have trouble reaching that foot up to their inner thigh. An alternative option is to place the bottom of the foot on the inside edge of the lower leg, down by your calf. As long as the foot is not pressing against the knee, you can put that foot wherever it's the most comfortable for you. The other thing they never say in the demos, but ought to repeat - is that if it hurts. Don't do it. If you are stressing or straining your knees, you need to stop doing that exercise. Keep an eye open for my complete review shortly.

Weight Loss Assistance with Virtual Avatars

    http://stefkloibhofer.wordpress.com/2008/06/11/weight-loss-a...

Since Nintendo Wii released their new Wii Fit game it seems like everyone is talking about avartars motivating people to loose weight. I believe it was a news report on CTV Monday night where they interviewed a gentalman who was attempting to come up with a program that would help motivate people to continue to exercising by having the avatar gain or loose weight depending on how fast and long they ran on a tredmill. I haven’t been able to find a view that shows that interview but I did find a video that shows a gentelman who created a Virtual Gandhi in Second Life who is powered by a treadmill. The video is able to be viewed at the side of my blog. For more information about virtual avarts and exercising check out the following links http://fashiontech.wordpress.com/2008/05/15/avatars-for-weight-loss-and-exercise/ http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/15/fashion/15fitness.html?_r=1&oref=slogin http://video.on.nytimes.com/?fr_story=a08209bdec8525ee971adf5745c879ca718703fc

WHEN Nintendo released the Wii 18 months ago, it upended the notion of what video games could be. Moving beyond the sunlight-deprived young men at gaming ’s core, Nintendo appealed to the rest of the world with an intuitive, family-friendly entertainment experience. read more | digg story

    How Fit is Wii Fit?

    http://blog.wellalarm.com/2008/05/wii-fit.html
55 days ago in The WELLalarm Blog · No authority yet

Wii Fit is here! The Nintendo game was designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, who created millions of couch potatoes with his previous games like Mario Brothers, Donkey Kong, and Zelda. Miyamoto is now trying to reform those couch potatoes with Wii, a gaming system that uses a remote-control wand requiring players to actually move their bodies to play. Miyamoto took this idea a step farther by designing Wii Fit, a game created to get people purposefully exercising. The game comes with a Wii balance board(TM), which you can use to play balance games and do strength training, yoga, and aerobics. Players weigh themselves every day and can set goals and chart their progress. So what are people saying about Wii Fit? Will it turn you into a lean, mean machine, and will you have fun while you're at it? From what I've read, the game has some limitations. Oh, you knew that was coming, didn't you? There still is no magic wand for fitness. Wii Fit appears to be ideal for fitness novices, people who don't exercise much to begin with. The yoga component is more about exercise than an authentic yoga practice, and the strength training is a good place to get started but no substitute for the gym. This is according to a small survey of Wii Fit testers in the New York Times. Another reviewer for the Times was not impressed with the intensity of the Wii Fit workouts. The game seems to prioritize weight loss over cardiovascular health, perhaps because weight is easier to track on the Wii Fit balance board. Still, if Wii Fit gets otherwise sedentary people to move around I think that's a good thing. Wired blogger Chris Kholer admitted to the appeal when a friend asked him why he didn't just go running instead: "'Because I want to bank Wii Fit minutes,' I say, realizing how into the 'game' aspect I am." Wii Fit appeals to a wider audience than the usual gaming crowd, but also provides more exercise than the gaming crowd usually gets. Wii Fit may even be a great fit for senior citizens. I'll stick with my own workout routine, thanks all the same. But I do know a few couch potatoes who could use a little electronic motivation. Read about another gamer's test ride of Wii Fit on Kotaku. Watch the trailer for Wii Fit, and then watch a parody of the Wii Fit trailer.

    Wii Fit, Ewwwww

Wii Fit: the idea of it just reeks of gadget joy for shopping-channel aficionados. And fitness industry insiders with their spreadsheets oozing sumptuous numbers. If you’ve ever tried to do yoga from a video you know that it’s just hard–uncomfortable and imperfect–to do it outside of a live, real-time classroom. Do you really want to be rated on your yoga practice? And by a machine? Talk about feeling like a number… So far the reviews are mixed. From Om Yoga’s founder and director Cyndi Lee, to game theory reporter for the NYTimes the reviews are not hot at all. Not to bash those like who might like Wii Fit, like women caring for small children at home, but ew. Ew.

Excited about the Wii Fit and a Word about Consistency

    http://smallstepstohealth.com/2008/05/excited-about-the-wii-...

I am dying to get home from work today. Yep, today is the expected arrival of my Wii Fit. After reading reviews of the game from nytimes and here, I cannot wait to give it a spin. And to spend the weekend writing a great post about it. I am not looking to replace my workout dvds any time soon or give away my elliptical machine, but I think it might just add an element of fun to those days when I go through the motions of a workout without much enjoyment. Consistency is more important than how strong you are or how little you eat when it comes to weight loss. Most people without any medication problems will loose weight with consistent workouts and consistent selection of nutritional food to fuel their bodies. The rate we see the change in our bodies depends on the combination of food and activity will vary for each of us. The principle of eating nutritional food and increasing our physical activity will work, but we must be consistent. The problem is that sometimes it takes months and even years to change our sedentary lifestyle before we see any results. That is where fun comes in. If we are…

    Funsize Friday 5/23

Funsize Friday 5/23 May 23rd, 2008 Seriously? It’s really almost the end of May? How did this happen! Outrage! At least it’s getting warm out, and here’s some of what happened this week you may have missed. - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of “Meh” - I saw it last night, didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it. Worth seeing, just don’t expect wide-eyed wonder like the first time you saw the original Indy movies. Plus, you’re not 8 years old now, so I guess no Indy underoos this time around. - Netflix Announces Streaming Movies on Your TV - The technogeek in me needs one. Which means almost all of me needs one. - Pacman: The Movie - It’s coming. Be terrified. - David Cook Wins American Idol - I’m overjoyed. Not for David Cook, I’m just glad we get our yearly summer respite from AI mania. - River to River Festival Dates Announced - Including a free Wire show next week that I just found out about and is causing me to have difficulty breathing. - Wii Fit Released - I picked it up, and I am a picture of perfect physical health after playing it for a week. Of course, I was before this week, but that’s beside the point. Funsize Bonus! Baseball season’s getting rolling, I really need to go to a Mets game. But if I ever see a guy throw a pitch like this, I will love that person forever. Amazing.
