Imagine: a 48-year-old man flying solo, without an airplane, 7,500 feet above the earth. Well, Swiss pilot Yves Rossy did it, with the help of jet-powered wings. Richard Roth explains his feat.

Rocket Men
http://rockturtleneck.blogspot.com/2008/05/rocket-men.htmlLast week, Swiss "Rocket Man" Yves Rossy became the first person in the world to fly with wings under rocket power, meaning that the age of futuristic, Buzz Lightyear-like jet pack travel is finally here. But this is Rock Turtleneck, not Popular Science magazine. And when I think "Rocket Man," I think Bill Shatner. I used to think Shatner's haunting interpretation of the Elton John/Bernie Taupin ode to the pressures of space travel "Rocket Man" was definitive. Then I stumbled upon master thespian Chris Elliot's version from Late Night with David Letterman. Smoke 'em if you've got 'em. Real-life Iron Man
http://www.ryanjhale.com/?p=11My wife and I went and saw Iron Man last weekend and really liked the movie. But this guy is *really like* Iron Man in that he is flying, over the Swiss Alps, at 7,500 feet, at 185mph. He’s got the delta wing and 4 jet engines strapped to his back. Amazing! You can see the story over at CBS as well as a picture gallery from his flight. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/05/15/eveningnews/main4102019.shtml

Rocket Man Feels Wind Beneath His Wings
http://pei.nu/rocket-man-feels-wind-beneath-his-wingsStepping off an airplane 7,500 feet above Lake Geneva, and, look, up in the sky it’s Yves Rossy. He’s a 48-year-old Swiss airline pilot, soaring 185 mph strapped to jet-powered wings, CBS News correspondent Richard Roth reports. “I don’t steer it, I fly it,” Rossy said. “It’s like a child playing airplane, like that, exactly like this. It’s totally intuitive.” “Pure flight,” he calls it. Like flying in an airplane - without the airplane. “You’re almost naked. You have just this little thing on your back, and moving your body it turns, it flies, it climbs,” he said. “Its like something artificial - but it’s real.” Read More?
